Barbara revolutionized
dog training in Regina, Saskatchewan by being the first to offer Manners classes instead of obedience
classes, thus proving to be the leader of the pack in local dog culture. She forever
changed how dog training is done in Regina by rejecting harsh coercion and punishment
based training methods and instead chooses to train dogs with compassion and applied
learning theory.
Barbara is a Dog Behaviourist and Certified Trainer
and Mentor who lives in Regina, Saskatchewan with her husband, their six dogs and
is the owner of “The Dog’s Den Training School”. Barbara received
her Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Philosophy from Luther College at the University
of Regina and her Mentor Trainer Certification from Animal Behaviour College out
of Northridge California. She inherited a great love of dogs from her father, Ken Lloyd,
and was taught respect for all living creatures from her mom, Betty Lloyd.
Barbara attributes her Canine Behavioural Knowledge to having had the opportunity
to be mentored by Sue Ailsby and having the privilege of raising and training several
breeds. Three of Barbara’s current
six dogs were adopted from the Regina Humane Society: Isis & Nakita
her two Huskies and Artemis, a Briard, all born in 1999. Barbara's other three dogs
include two rescues: Solomon a Great Pyrenees born in August of 2004 and Duke, a
Yellow Lab born in August of 2006 and she also has one pedigreed dog: Gabriel, (Grischa
Vom Tegler Fleiss VSPI, TT) a Pink Papered German Import Rottweiler born in September
of 2004 in Berlin, Germany. Former
dogs include Daisy Doolittle, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Kahn, a Neufi/Akita
X, Riot and Rex, Rottweilers, Jake, a Terrier Cross, Odin an Akita, Timber a Siberian
Husky, Belle & Shakira both retired racing Greyhounds, Gretchen a Miniature
Schnauzer and Park Side Peppermint, Peppy, a Basset Hound.
Barbara’s approach to dog training is rooted in the belief that learning can
only be facilitated when a trust relationship has been established between guardian
and dog. Her skills and abilities are recognized by both municipal and Court of
Queen’s Bench, veterinarians, breeders and trainers across Canada, Germany
and the United States.
Supporting a strong belief in education, Barbara is routinely invited as a Guest
Lecturer at the University of Regina and at High School Psychology Classes to demonstrate
the Application of Operant Conditioning and Classical Conditioning. She is also
contracted as a mentor by “Animal Behaviours College” out of California
to mentor students in an 18 week mentorship program to facilitate their certification.
Barbara is also a published writer and has a broad history of media appearances
both on, and off camera as well as radio and in print.
